Over the past 14 months of motherhood, I have found that my daily “go to prayer” for my child has been based on the well-known blessing from Numbers 6:24-26.
It is my deepest desire that my child grow to know and submit to Christ. This prayer helps me to keep in perspective the daily, earthly problems like runny noses and teething that pale in comparison to my son’s biggest problem – that he needs to be reconciled to God in order to truly live.
Lord, bless him and keep him;
You are the perfect Father, Provider and Sustainer. Please bless him with a desire for you, an obedient heart and wisdom to follow you. Thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, who is our daily bread, satisfying our deepest need. May we abide in him and bear fruit so that as our child depends on us we are able to nourish him also. May he be blessed as you continue your good work in us and see it to completion (Philippians 1:6). Please start your good work in him! Make this child one of your own and lead him to repentance at an early age, keeping him in the palm of your hand and sustaining him by your grace to the end.
Lord, make your face to shine on him and be gracious to him;
You alone are perfect and holy; you are the light of the world! (John 8:12) In your sovereignty, help him to see the darkness of his sin in the light of your holiness. Help us also to flee from the darkness and lead him as we run towards the light. By your grace, may he repent of his sin, put his faith in Christ, walk in your light always and live!
Lord, lift up your countenance upon him
We know that it is only you that can make him your own, Lord. We beg you, please look upon him with favour! Do not leave him to his sin! Restore him to right relationship with you through faith in Christ so that he may call on you as “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15). Give him your Spirit to comfort and sustain him. May Christ dwell in his heart (Ephesians 3:17) for your glory.
Lord, give him peace.
Thank you for the peace that you have given us through Christ. Please also give him this peace that surpasses all understanding and guard his heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Give him satisfaction in you and you alone. Give him a desire for things above and not for earthly treasures (Colossians 3:2). May he be a bearer of your gospel of peace to the world so that others too may have peace with you (Romans 10:15).
