It’s about times when I have no grace available for my kids…
because I forget that there is no grace available for me.

I came here from DG’s blog and wanted to say thank you for your blog entries lately. They’re always convicting but also freeing to hear afresh the wonders of God’s grace. Thank you for reminding me of the gospel in my parenting. I’m looking forward to the lunchtime discussion on being a pastor’s wife at the Gospel Coalition conference this summer! (My husband’s the pastor of a small church in the city.)
Gloria, I loved this insight: “But just because I ‘know better’ doesn’t mean I live better and love my neighbor better. This is why I need grace.”
I have experienced the same feeling many times, but never put it into words as well as you just did. That line and the list of questions you then raised reminds me of a line from the Relient K Song Be My Escape: “The beauty of grace is that it makes life unfair.”
If life were fair, we’d all be doomed.

Ah. I love it. How impossible it is to lavish grace on our children when we don’t know it ourselves! “And when we rise we rise to God, approaching his throne with confidence to claim the grace that is now guaranteed us in Christ. Then by God’s grace we can extend grace to our children.” Thanks Gloria. Thanks God!
