Hair care & God’s love

“Ew, gross!” My daughter pulled a hair off of her lunch plate.

Funny, isn’t it?

We fawn over our hair when it is attached to our heads– hair styles, hair colors, hair cuts, hair products– but as soon as it drops to the ground we sweep it up and throw it away.

When I was pregnant with my first child I noticed how much faster my hair was growing. Then after my daughter was born I was bummed at how quickly it was thinning back out. I remember paying quite a bit of attention to my hair during that season.

But even the most conscientious hair-care experts among us would never go so far as to count the number of hairs on our heads. None of us has so much concern for our own wellbeing that we would pay that much attention to detail.

Yet the Bible says that there is one who does care for you that much.

In Luke chapter 12, Jesus describes our Father’s mindful affection using an illustration about common sparrows and hair.

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Luke 12:6-7).

As you wash, comb, or style your hair today, remember that your reverence and fealty belong to the Lord. May his faithful love embolden you to revere him alone as you fearlessly go about the work he’s called you to do.

I love what Jesus says further down in this passage – “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

Thank you for bringing focus to my Monday morning! Blessings to you!

What a great insight. I have trouble getting my cowlick under control, but God knows how many hairs make up that patch of unruly hair. Nice job getting me thinking on how God’s attentiveness to every single part of me is beyond my understanding, Gloria.
