One of the Holy Spirit’s “jobs” is to comfort the saints. One of the ways he does this is by communicating God’s love. Here’s a brief meditation from John Owen on this subject:
“The Holy Spirit pours out the love of God into our hearts (Rom. 5:5).
That is, the love of God for us, not our love for him.
The Comforter gives a sweet and abundant evidence and persuasion of the love of God to us, so that the human soul is delighted and fully satisfied.
This is his particular work. As all his works are works of love and kindness, so it is with this communication of the love of the Father.
What experience we have of the spirit of heaven in this world arises from this love poured into our hearts.”
